9/11

Fri Sep 11, 2009, 7:18 AM
well i came on today expecting to see billions of journals about it...but i haven't.

not sure if that's a good thing or not, but i'll take this opportunity to commemorate those who lost their lives in the attacks on the world trade centre, the soldiers who have lost their lives in the fighting that has followed, and to the disproportionate number of innocent Afgans, Iraqis - Arabs in general, who have lost their lives as a result of the mess we (i'm not going to hedge this one. America predominantly, though not solely) have been largely responsible for creating.

oh and for the record i was never anti-war. the attacks on 9/11 were wrong and the Taliban needed to be removed, and on paper the removal of Saddam should have been a good thing too. the fact that neither of these things have led to improvements in the respective countries (and i'm not being impatient. these things take time, but the ay we're going about things, they'll never happen) is down to the failures in the politics and the planning.

but that's beside the point.

Thanks for the condolences Ben. As an American, it's very reassuring that some people in the rest of the world sympathize with our plight. I mean sure it happened 8 years ago, but its effect is definitely still being felt today, not just by America, but by the entire world. Thanks again for the kind words.

And, for the record, my views on the war and whatnot are pretty much like yours.

I agree with just about all of that. The only thought that I differ on is that I think that both countries have improved. However, it is an unstable improvement, which is why we can't leave yet, I think. But we're perhaps closer than we think.

people just wish to put the pain behind them and move on like it never happened and go back into our own little worlds thinking that we are once again safe from the dangers of this world. if only that were true. pain never fully goes away. i can never forget the day that happenen

really? i'm not sure. in Afghanistan we're (somewhat arrogantly) trying to impose a replica of our own western democratic system on a country that has been ruled by guns and a tribal system for hundreds of years. democratic votes are succeptable to corruption. the people vote under the instruction of their tribal leaders, and their tribal leaders vote under orders/intimidation of the Taliban.

thing is, the Taliban fight in seasons and it's coming to the end of their fighting season now. i can honestly see our politicians using the sudden drop in activity as ';proof' that we're winning/have won, and getting out of the place. then the Taliban will come back n nothing will have changed.

Iraq's a bit different - they're used to a more modern way of life/governing however you then get the deep lying splits within the population, and of course the influence of the Taliban and Alqueida. if we leave there it'll decend into civil war, but there's not really any solution to a religious problem like that.

but hey, hope you're right.

well i think everyone should sympathise - people died, and died horribly. but it goes both ways too - sympathy for the people of the countries that have been invaded/destroyed as a result of the retaliation. the thing is we get all the TV programs and documentaries leading up to the anniversary of 9/11, about how the relatives of the people who died in the tower have had their lives ruined etc. etc. etc. but what about all the Arabs (and there are far more of them) who really have had their entire lives and livelihoods destroyed - but we don't hear about them.

This is true. I personally don't feel any... nah I better not. I don't want to get off on a rant, or spark a debate. So I'll just leave it at that. ^^;
